Unique temporary exhibition - the work van Pete Gerrits
This year marks the 115th anniversary of the establishment of the Holy Land Foundation. More than a century ago, this marked the beginning of the realization of an impressive park on the moraine ridge south of Nijmegen. Inspired by pilgrimages to the Holy Land by chaplain Arnoldus Suys, architect Johannes Stuyt, and artist Piet Gerrits, a shared endeavor arose to "make the Gospel of Salvation tangible" here. In this way, it became possible for people from the Netherlands and surrounding countries, who were unable to make the long and costly journey to the Middle East, to experience the Holy Land.
Over the past century, Museumpark Orientalis has not stood still. The park grew into a unique meeting place between cultures, sometimes characterized by stillness and reflection, and at other times by a vibrant atmosphere and wondrous gatherings. We won't let our 115th birthday pass unnoticed!
Especially for this occasion, Museumpark Orientalis opens the gates of its park on three Saturdays: February 14, 21, and 28. Visitors can view a small exhibition on the history of our park (permanent collection) as well as a special anniversary exhibition in the Education Room. A number of rare works from our depot are on display here. Due to their fragility, these objects have virtually never been exhibited before.
On display are, among other things, plaster prototypes of (trunk) statues located in the museum and at the cemetery. Additionally, fourteen Stations of the Cross from the Gerardus Majella Church in Tilburg are exhibited, created by our resident artist Piet Gerrits (1878-1957). Also on display is the watercolor of Father Suys, recently received on loan and painted by Anton Kloosterhuis (1888-1859).
Of course, the park is also open to enjoy nature, visit the villages, and discover the various experience trails, such as Nature Adventure, the Philosopher's Path, and the audio or monument routes.
